The White House Correspondents’ Dinner is a source of contention among Washington D.C. residents. On the one hand, it’s a celebrity magnet, attracting an exciting group of revelers to a town not normally known for glamorous residents. On the other, it can be uncomfortable to see D.C.’s political reporters cozy up with stars and, in many cases, the politicians they’re supposed to challenge on a daily basis.
Enter Nerd Prom, a new documentary by former Politico journalist Patrick Gavin. Gavin, a veteran of the dinner and similar Washington-area events, decided to find out what the Correspondents’ Dinner—and its many offshoots—is really about. In this clip, premiering exclusively on VF.com, Gavin asks a handful of stars in town for the festivities to name a single White House correspondent.
